Ohio’s TechCred Program: Employers Can Receive Reimbursement for Employee Training

On August 1, 2021, applications reopened for Ohio’s TechCred program, which provides reimbursement to employers for valuable technology training for employees. This will be the program’s 10th application period.

TechCred helps Ohioans learn new skills and helps employers build a stronger workforce with the skills needed in a technology-infused economy. Employers who submit successful applications will be reimbursed up to $2,000 per credential when current, or prospective employees complete eligible technology-focused credentials. Employers are eligible to receive up to $30,000 per funding round.

Approved certificates and certifications cover a wide variety of topics, including business technology, healthcare technology, IoT and cybersecurity, military and smart transportation, construction technology, information technology, manufacturing technology, and robotics/automation.

Any Ohio registered employer that employs Ohio resident W-2 employees is eligible, and employers of all sizes and in all industries are encouraged to apply.

To receive reimbursement, the employer must verify that those credential earners are Ohio residents with a verifiable Ohio address. Individuals must be W-2 employees at the time of the reimbursement request; independent contractors or 1099 employees are not eligible for this program.

Employer applications will be reviewed competitively, based on the following criteria:

  • Pledged wage increase in relation to credential cost
  • Level of economic distress in employer’s region and regional balance of awards
  • Amount of employer contribution toward the cost of credential

To date, a total of 1,310 Ohio employers have been approved for TechCred, which will fund up to 23,723 tech-focused credentials to upskill Ohio workers.
